The introduction of multimedia technologies and the internet in learning has been observed as a means of improving accessibility and quality of delivery and learning among students and teachers in private Secondary Schools and tertiary institutions in Nigeria. E-learning is contributing in learning and utilizing electronic technologies to access educational curriculum in educational sector for the purpose of advancing the knowledge base.
21st Century has heralded the educational technology that has facilitated e-learning among secondary and tertiary institutions in developing countries and E-learning is widely subscribed to in school and other organizations all over the world even the Nigerian Secondary schools and tertiary institutions.
Nigeria school are mostly managed by foreign communities, entrepreneurs, agencies or groups such as religious bodies, communities and corporate bodies.
Meanwhile, the impacts of e-learning in facilitating academic performance have gone a long way, more effort should be made by the management of secondary schools and tertiary institutions in providing a e-learning facilities in their institutions and students should be encouraged to make a proper use of these facilities by given them e-learning related assignment and projects.
Nigeria is informed by the deplorable state of educational system due to inadequate teaching, learning facilities and infrastructures, most libraries in Nigerian higher institutions and secondary schools have audio-visual learning materials that are hardly utilized as a result of incessant power outages and sometimes lack of awareness on the part of the students. The main learning approach focuses on teachers rather than the students, where teacher determines what to teach, how to teach and less concern about the students at the receiving end.
However, online learning had been put in place in school to compensate for the problems occasioned by this traditional learning paradigm which has the potential to provide opportunities for reflective and integrating learning outcomes. Now, E-learning provides the students with adaptive personalized learning, computer-enhanced learning which involves the use of mobile technologies, web-based teaching materials and provides rooms for discussion, collaborative softwares, sending e-mail, blogs etc
The survival of the tertiary educational institutions in this 21st century increasingly rely on various forms of electronic delivery system and communication facilities that are available in markets as requirements for educational flexibility and the use of new multimedia technologies and the Internet in learning is seen as a means to improve accessibility, efficiency and quality of learning by facilitating access to resources and services as well as remote exchanges and collaboration.
E-learning will continue to provide a standardized pattern in education with a mission to serve as a development platform for present-day society based on knowledge. It is evident that the concept of E-learning is considered to be very attractive as a new learning model whose effect will be a positive one to the development of education in developing countries especially Nigeria, with all its potentialities.
Although, not much effort is taken for its implementation because the present-day research of E-learning in Nigeria shows that having E-learning on the educational agenda in Nigeria still face a lot of challenges, some schools still struggle with acquiring these facilities even if the introduction of new multimedia technologies and the Internet in teaching-learning relationship has been seen as a means to improve accessibility, efficiency and quality of learning by facilitating access to information resources and services as well as remote exchanges and collaboration.
Students in higher educational institutions that engaged in E-Learning, generally performed better than those in face-to-face courses and students who participate in E-Learning achieve better grades than students who studied traditional approach. E- learning is growing very fast and becoming popular and that is why many higher educational institutions are adopting to virtual learning system.
In some universities, their E-learning does not add any value to the teaching and learning activities of the school and perhaps they do not investigate the impact of E-learning on student academic performance, also much research has not been done on the relationship of E learning use and students academic performance
Meanwhile, today’s learners want relevant, mobile, self-paced, and personalized content where students can learn at their own comfort and requirement and due to the wide set of benefits it gives to students, E-Learning has become quite popular and appreciated among students all over the world.
E-learning is best suited for everyone, it can be taken up by office goers and housewives, many people choose to learn at weekends or evenings where you can access the content an unlimited number of times, attend the lectures whenever you want with ease. It is effective and consistent and you can synchronize with modern learners – a way to provide quick delivery of lessons, creating and communicating new training, policies, concepts and ideas.
